If you turn west (left if you are traveling north, right if going south) off the highway and go one block to South Virginia Street, on your right you will find the cheapest place for groceries. That's right: WinCo Foods! Grab a cart and your shopping list.
But be prepared. WinCo Foods only takes cash, checks and they just started taking debit cards. No credit cards are accepted. There is an ATM inside and a credit union in the same shopping center. (775) 853-7474.
Great bulks food section and so cheap on dry and canned goods, you'll wish you had this store at home. Very little natural or organic foods. Be careful with produce however. It's not the highest quality around and doesn't keep as long as you want. You can also fill up your water jugs inside. Another tip: purchase $50.00 or more in groceries and you get a discount on fuel!
Also next to WinCo Foods is a fabulous Dollar Tree, a credit union, gas station and a Wendy's, along with a brand new IHOP.
Across Virginia Street, inside the Stop & Go, you will find the best homemade cinnamon rolls on the West Coast. Get there early before they sell out!
If you turn left going south back onto Virginia Street, a number of stores down the road will interest you. Ben's Fine Wines & Spirits, Indian Smoke Shop, and Faster Care (for quick medical needs).
At Ben's, you will find a HUGE selection of wines, spirits and beers with all the various trimmings (dry ice, ice, lemons, limes, cork screws, etc.). Open from 9 AM to 9 PM and on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 AM to 10 PM. Call (775) 853-2378.
Instead of turning west off the freeway, you may want to turn east to find some other shopping standards at South Meadows Parkway and Double R Blvd. Smith's Food and Drug and a new sushi restaurant, Taco Bell, Keva Juice, Port of Subs and other businesses dot your horizon.
In need of some urgent medical attention? Washoe Med opened an ER and an Urgent Care Center just down the street on Double R Blvd. Turn right. (775) 355-5970.
