Fernley

Fernley is a blend of rural and city, the old and the new -- and as some put it, "She wears her mom's boots"

Fernley has grown up into a vibrant little city, a large mix of Native American, Western, agricultural, amazon.com, and transient cultures. Fernley is proud to be among Nevada's newest cities, incorporated in 2001, and its fastest-growing. This two-exit city has some great things to offer, notably for the traveller. I-80 Exit #46

This exit is key to several different stops and you can actually get to Hwy 447 from here. One side of the interstate is Pilot Travel Center and on the other is the Love's Truck Stop.

Pilot welcomes us with open arms. They've got showers, ATM, Wendy's, a limited Dairy Queen and OMG! Wireless Internet. Can you believe it?! And if you need someone to wire you money, Western Union. Good fuel prices and real easy ingress and egress. There's even a truck wash. Keep in mind, this is not a quiet place to check your email. It's a typical truck stop casino with slot machines complete with the smoke, noise and variety of smells.

If you keep going past the Pilot, U-Haul is down the road. They like us and perhaps you can rent a trailer or truck from them. Good local people. Call them at 775-575-1933.

Come around the bend heading into Fernley proper and on your right is the Wigwam Restaurant. Typical diner food with a Native American collection of arrowheads and other artifacts. It's quite interesting to look at while you enjoy a decent meal.

As you make your way through town, the Chevron on the left will fill your propane tanks. The Chinese restaurant on the right will satisfy a craving but it's not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination.

It's at this intersection that you would turn right onto 95A to get to the dump. Go about 2.5 miles down and it's on the left. If you pass the high school, turn around. You've gone too far. But you won't be going to the dump on your way to the Burn. Stay tuned for directions when coming off playa.

Now you could turn around at this point or continue through town. When you get to the new round-about, bear left. Go over the bridge and drop down. On your left is the Scolari's Shopping Center, which is also accessible off I-80 Exit #48.

Open 24/7, Scolari's Food & Drug will stock pallets of water outside on the lot for easy access and stock extra dry ice for us along with all the basic necessities. You can park for a couple hour nap, but please, no overnight parking. Their lot is much too busy and too small for that. However, there is space next door. Be sure to check in with management, who welcomes us. BTW, the lot is also now easier to get into with larger vehicles and trailers.

Also in that shopping center is a Port of Subs and a Pizza Factory. Great people there along with good food to fill your belly. And there's the Golden Arches and Jack in the Box as well. Chevron and Shell stations are close along with Motel 8. Don't forget the Silverado Casino. Good place to go to the bathroom and coffee shop food that's open 24/7.

Brand spanking new this year is the Washoe Med Family Medical Center - Urgent Care Center. Hours for the urgent care facility are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 7 PM and Saturdays, 9 AM to 3 PM. Closed on Sundays. This is great news and a huge benefit to our community. No more long drives to Reno or Sparks for excellent medical care.

Now turn left out of Scolari's and head for the interstate. Take Interstate 80 West and take the next exit #46. What? Are you back to where you started? Yes, you are. Turn north (playa-bound!) off the interstate and Love's Truck Stop is on the left. Keep going and BOOM! There's a sign for Hwy 447. Turn right and you are on your final stretch home!

Yep. Fernley is one big freaking stretched-out circle. And it's easy to go round and round and round.

Leaving the Playa: Directions to Fernley Dump

So, you're sad that you are leaving but so need to get rid of your trash and various moop. Here's the easiest way to get to the Fernley dump.

When you come into Wadsworth at the stop sign, instead of turning right towards I-80, turn left. Go through Wadsworth, under the interstate, past the Pilot Station and head into downtown Fernley. When you come to the stop light, turn right onto Hwy. 95A. Go about 2 miles. It will be on your left, just past the canal. If you pass the Fernley High School on your left, you have gone too far. Hours are expanded now to 7 AM to 4:30 PM seven days a week. They will be open over Labor Day weekend and each cubic yard will cost you $5.50 to unload. Cash or checks only. No credit cards or debit cards accepted. 3 yard ($16.50) mininum. 775-575-7150 for additional information.

VERY IMPORTANT!! DO NOT DUMP ANY GARBAGE OR TRASH IN ANY BUSINESS OR REST AREAS. Either take it all the way home with you or to one of the dumps listed. Leave no trace as you leave Nevada and we will keep welcoming you back.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has indicated that Burners in recent years have left more and more trash at the west-bound rest area on I-80 between Fernley and Reno. If this continues to happen, the Burning Man organization is going to be asked to pay a bond for trash removal, and volunteers are now being asked to contribute time to monitoring visits from departing Burners to remind all of us to dispose of our trash in appropriate locations. Besides the dump in Fernley, there are several trash and recycling facilities available in the Reno area. Please be responsible!

More dump locations near the former Reno Hilton, now the Grand Sierra Resort.

By the way, something of special interest to burners who'd really rather not lug loads of stuff all the way back home, e've heard that the Black Rock Mini Storage is completely full, so if you're among those who are going to need to store projects or camp stuff in Nevada after your playa adventure, may we suggest:
