If you are coming to Black Rock City from SoCal, chances are you are riding through on US Highway 395 – welcome back to civilization! Below is some burner-friendly travel narrative through Gardnerville, Minden, and then Carson City, while further down is a listing of all the businesses we recommend to you in the area.
Basque Food and culture are alive and well in Gardnerville. Sharkey’s and The Overland hotel are only two examples of what you’ll find. Lots of food served family style. Make sure you have an empty belly before you sit down to eat and don’t forget to drink a “pecan punch”. It’s a Basque drink that will have you feeling no pain after just one.
Back to the road in Gardnerville, at Buckeye Road, what awaits you? Thrift store goodies! Run entirely by volunteers, purchases benefit the local hospice, and we all know what great work hospices do.
If you continue down Buckeye Road, down about 2 miles you will find Bently Biofuels – the only place in Northern Nevada serving 100% Biodiesel there and for the playa (see below for all the details).
Coming into Carson City along US-395, for an URGENT CARE center, at Mica Drive turn right. It's up on the hill to the right.
At Jacks Valley Road find Home Depot, Ross, Target and Port of Subs.
At Topsy Lane you will find Trader Joes, Super Wal-Mart with fuel, Del Taco, King China Buffet, Bank of America, Borders, Jiffy Lube, In-N-Out Burger, Cold Stone Creamery, and Mexican and Chinese restaurants are among the highlights.
At Clear Creek Road is Costco for your big box warehouse shopping fix (with membership).
At Clearview Drive, on your left is Save Mart with a US Bank inside. As you continue north, past the dealerships, on your right is Lowe's Home Improvement, a very good place to get hardware and building materials, off at Fairview Drive.
Into downtown Carson City, across from the Nevada State Legislature, Comma Coffee on the left makes a great cup and the decor may help inspire your theme camp. Wireless Internet is available.
The Carson Nugget allows RV/oversized parking in Lot #4, and offers up a dirt cheap 24hr coffee shop and a limited buffet.
At Long Street, on the right is a huge thrift store, Friends In Service Helping (FISH). They’ve started putting out their costumes in August. They discovered a few years ago that they can sell more costumes during Burning Man than durning Halloween.
Further along, down Old Hot Springs Road right off of US-395, Carson Hot Springs is close by, offering a Hot Spring Pool with "hammer," and two 10 person tubs (see below for more details).
On your way to Carson Hot Springs you may also want to stop in at “Classy Seconds Thrift”. It’s a hidden gem in the thrift store world. Prices are extremely cheep and the staff is wonderful! Great Indian food even awaits across the street at India Garden, which offers an affordable and yummy lunch buffet.
And now you're almost out of Carson City. At College Parkway on your left is Save Mart. They have a huge selection of alcohol and one of the biggest parking lots around. Fuel is also available and is also on the cheap side.
The last two hotels on the way out of Carson City on US-395 are Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn. Book online or call, rooms range anywhere from $80-$130, depending on the day.
But wait! There's one more major important place to note: Carson-Tahoe Medical Center. Turn left at Arrowhead Drive for any EMERGENCY MEDICAL care needs.

Bently has been very supportive of burners both off and on playa, providing E10, E85, B5, B20, and B99.9 fuels at their store, as well as making pre-arranged deliveries of B99.9 to locations in Black Rock City early in the week of the event. Wait? Bulk Deliveries to the playa?! Yes, they can deliver biodiesel to you on the playa. But -- IMPORTANT: Please call Carlo directly at 775-720-0754 as early as possible to arrange fuel deliveries. Bently will be delivering B99.9 (not blends) for both taxed (on-road) and untaxed (generators, construction equipment) machinery early in the week. They will need an accurate estimate of your fuel needs by July 31st. They will also need to know your exact location on the playa and a contact person. They will not however be providing fuel storage containers for the event. Weather can sometimes make fuel deliveries impossible, so please plan accordingly, and make sure you have enough fuel on hand to get you through a few days.
